Install Tips for 3D Carbon (General Formulations)
If you’re trying to get General Formulations “Carbon” (carbon-fiber–look vinyl) to stick reliably—especially on automotive parts—the key is surface prep + heat + post-install care. Here’s the proven, shop-tested approach that works best 👇
1️⃣ Proper Surface Prep (Most Important Step)
If adhesion fails, it’s almost always prep.
Do this:
-
Wash with soap + water first (remove dirt/grime)
-
Wipe with isopropyl alcohol (70–90%)
-
For automotive plastics or painted panels, finish with:
-
Rapid Prep or Prep-All
-
-
Let surface fully dry
🚫 Avoid:
-
Armor All, silicone sprays, waxes, or detailers
-
Paper towels that leave lint (use microfiber)
2️⃣ Use Heat During Installation (Critical for Carbon Vinyl)
Carbon vinyl is thicker and textured—it needs heat to conform and activate adhesive.
-
Use a heat gun, not a hair dryer
-
Warm the vinyl until it’s:
-
Soft and pliable (not shiny/melting)
-
-
Apply pressure while warm
Target temp: ~120–140°F surface temp
3️⃣ Firm Pressure + Dwell Time
-
Use a felt-edge squeegee
-
Push air out, not sideways
-
After install:
-
Re-heat edges
-
Press firmly with a gloved thumb or squeegee
-
🕒 Let it cure 24–48 hours before:
-
Washing
-
Driving at highway speeds
-
Exposing to rain or cold
4️⃣ Edge Sealing (Highly Recommended)
Carbon vinyl loves to lift at edges.
Best options:
-
3M Edge Sealer 3950
-
Clear nail polish (budget option for tiny edges)
Apply sparingly to:
-
Corners
-
Sharp radii
-
Leading edges (mirrors, trim, fuel doors)
5️⃣ When to Use Adhesion Promoter
Use only when needed (it’s aggressive):
✔ Use on:
-
Raw plastic
-
Textured trim
-
Powder-coated parts
❌ Avoid on:
-
Areas you may remove later
-
Painted surfaces unless necessary
Best choice:
-
3M Primer 94 (apply with a foam swab, thin coat)
6️⃣ Environmental Conditions Matter
Ideal install conditions:
-
65–85°F
-
Low humidity
-
Indoors if possible
Cold installs = weak bond, especially with carbon vinyl.
