This isn't a bent piece of plate steel. The skid cover is engineered with a deliberate 1/4–1/2 inch clearance to the plastic bumper. Because the skid mounts to the frame while the bumper mounts to the body, that gap accommodates chassis flex and relative movement — so nothing binds or rubs as the truck articulates.
That same clearance doubles as a buffer, absorbing energy in low-speed rear impacts before it reaches your bumper.
